Whenever I fly to New York for work I always try to find a couple of podcasts to listen to.
This past week one from SaaStr caught my attention specifically as we continue to focus on enterprise expansion this month.
It was from the recent SaaStr event and featured the CBO (Chief Business Officer) from Stripe discussing their playbook for expanding upmarket.
If you listen to this closely she discusses how they chose 30 lighthouse accounts. It wasn’t all about the biggest and best logos. Rather, it was a data-driven approach to see which verticals they had the strongest foothold.
This is proper way to do it and why we continue to see Stripe be successful.
In my most recent guide Expanding Upmarket with Account-Based GTM Strategy, this is exactly how enterprise expansion for new business is broken down.
The most important thing in going upmarket is revenue and retention. You can’t get there by painting broad strokes.
Find the vertical or sub-vertical with your best customers, identify their pain points and use cases. Use that information to identify and target your prospect accounts.
